We were contacted to design this urban farm as an amenity to newly developed Changsha housing complex. The client, Rooftop Republic, wanted to offer China’s newly urbanized a familiar but modern take on the rural life many had just left behind.
We developed the farm design by, first, using the traditional rigorous linear farm grid, and clashing it with structure that is purely functional. Two walls form the main structure and also act as the base of the classroom and bar area. We placed the walls in strategic positioning that maximize shading. At the client’s request, the structure is all located near the center of the site to not disturb the form of the building for pedestrians. This allowed us to place bar tables at the north to maximize views of the nearby lakes.
